Aston Villa want to sign Brentford star but will wait until summer to complete deal

Aston Villa want to sign Brentford’s Romaine Sawyers but will wait until the summer transfer window to sign him according to a report from the Daily Mail.

Sawyers is very familiar with the West Midlands having started his career at Villa’s rivals West Bromwich Albion. However he never made an appearance for the Baggies and instead made his name at another Black Country club, Walsall. It was his impressive form there which earned him a move to Brentford and those performances have been replicated now that he is in West London rather than the West Midlands.

He has been linked with moves back to the West Midlands before, West Brom were reportedly interested back in the summer, but Aston Villa were rumoured to be making a more concrete offer to sign him this window. But while there is some definite interest on their part, it will probably not happen during this transfer window. While this report does not go into why the club are waiting until the summer to make an offer for Sawyers, it may be to avoid breaching Financial Fair Play rules which have caused problems for several Sky Bet Championship clubs this season.

This is a huge boost for Brentford as it means there is one less team coming after one of their top players. But with there being plenty of time left in the transfer window, it’s just as likely another team will state their interest and try and snatch the talented playmaker away from Griffin Park.
